With computer animation one of today’s hottest careers, it’s important to educate yourself in what the job entails before venturing into the workplace. The best place for you to do so is an academic setting, preferably one of the many computer animation universities that are sprouting all across the country.
Computer animation is unique in that it requires you to be proficient in both the creative and technical processes. Don’t think having just one skill is sufficient to guarantee success. In order to maximize your potential marketability, you need to be fluent in both art and computer technology.
Your artistic education begins with the fundamentals: the concept of drawing and color, two- and three-dimensional illustration, and technical design. Once you have those mastered, you move into learning digital media, mastering core skills such as motion capture and texture wrapping so that you can use a wide variety of software packages.
A solid background in art and computers isn’t enough, though. Just as in any business environment, the ability to interface with clients and co-workers in order to determine the structure of the project is just as important as being able to execute their needs. Quality computer animation universities will offer communication courses to supplement skills you might already have, thus making you a true artist, and not just another automaton.
In such a versatile industry, be smart about how you choose to enter it. Whether you want to design the effects for the next movie blockbuster or create the next bestselling game, your success relies on getting the right education at a computer animation university.
