School: Arkon Institute Program: Dental Assistants are trained in chairside assisting, four-handed dentistry, radiology, and the use of dental materials. In addition, they manage financial records, complete insurance forms, and schedule patients. Upon completion of the Dental Assistant program, graduates are eligible to take the Radiology Licensure Examination of Ohio to become a Dental X-ray Machine Operator. If you’re looking for a career in a health care profession that has a bright, stable future in terms of career prospects, working as a dental assistant could be the right career choice for you. Whatever happens in the US economy, people always need dentists, and dentists always need dental assistants.

As a dental assistant you’ll be able to take your pick from a range of job opportunities working with dentists, orthodontists, periodontists, oral surgeons, or even dental insurance companies. To take advantage of these opportunities it is necessary to have some training. A formal qualification from a dental assisting school gives you the skills you need and shows potential employers that you have the commitment to be a successful, responsible dental assistant.

Your program in dental assisting will give you a grounding in the various patient care, office and laboratory duties that a dental assistant is expected to perform. You will learn to prepare the patient and assist the dentist by sterilizing and disinfecting instruments, keeping the patient’s mouth clear, and handing instruments to the dentist. Other skills necessary are those associated with giving pre- and post-operative advice to patients, obtaining their dental records and a variety of other communication and administrative duties.

To get the most out of your education, you should find a program that is approved by The American Dental Association’s Commission on Dental Accreditation. These programs include classroom, laboratory, and preclinical instruction in dental-assisting skills and related theory as well as practical experience in dental schools, clinics, or dental offices.
