Diploma - Dental Assistant

School: Arkon Institute

Program: Dental Assistants are trained in chairside assisting, four-handed dentistry, radiology, and the use of dental materials. In addition, they manage financial records, complete insurance forms, and schedule patients. Upon completion of the Dental Assistant program, graduates are eligible to take the Radiology Licensure Examination of Ohio to become a Dental X-ray Machine Operator. These students may also sit for the Ohio Dental Association Certification Examination upon graduation and for the General Chairside Examination given by the Dental Assisting National Board after two years of full-time work experience and after having qualified for CPR Certification.

If you are wondering whether to go to college, or what to study, it is worth remembering that people with a college degree still earn considerably more than high-school graduates over a lifetime. Medical and dental professionals earn considerably more again. What’s more, the career progression for a dental professional is more definite than for many other careers and provides greater scope for private work and specialization. If that isn’t enough, medical and dental services are those least hit by the current weakness of the US economy.

In short, a dental career is well worth the work that goes into it. To be a fully qualified dentist or orthodontist does require a lot of hard work and dedication but the subject is interesting and challenging. To set you off on the best possible footing, the education and training you will receive at a dental college is a must. At a dental college you can qualify to work in any of the various aspects of the dental services. At the highest level, you can study to be a Doctor in Dental Surgery (DDS), or, at a lower level of qualification, you can qualify to be a dental administrative assistant or dental hygienist. Alternatively, you can study orthodontics, or take a program in International Dental Studies (IDS) or an Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD). Each of these programs qualifies you for different kinds of work and requires a different level of input and achievement. You should find out what is involved in each type of program and what it will qualify you to do before you enroll.
