A film, also called a movie, motion picture, moving picture, or photoplay, is a series of still images that, when shown on a screen, create the illusion of moving images. This optical illusion causes the audience to perceive continuous motion between separate objects viewed in rapid succession. The process of filmmaking is both an art and an industry. A film is created by photographing actual scenes with a motion-picture camera, by photographing drawings or miniature models using traditional animation techniques, by means of CGI and computer animation, or by a combination of some or all of these techniques, and other visual effects.

The word "cinema", short for cinematography, is often used to refer to filmmaking and the film industry, and to the art of filmmaking itself. The contemporary definition of cinema is the art of simulating experiences to communicate ideas, stories, perceptions, feelings, beauty or atmosphere by the means of recorded or programmed moving images along with other sensory stimulations

Film is used for a range of goals, including education and propaganda. When the purpose is primarily educational, a film is called an "educational film". Examples are recordings of academic lectures and experiments, or a film based on a classic novel. Film may be propaganda, in whole or in part, such as the films made by Leni Riefenstahl in Nazi Germany, US war film trailers during World War II, or artistic films made under Stalin by Eisenstein. They may also be works of political protest, as in the films of Andrzej Wajda, or more subtly, the films of Andrei Tarkovsky. The same film may be considered educational by some, and propaganda by others as the categorization of a film can be subjective.

You don’t have to go to Hollywood to live your dream; you can choose from movie schools spread right across the USA. For those with a passion for film, a degree in film studies can be the right first step for an exciting, rewarding future in TV or the movies.

The choice of careers in the movies is enormous, embracing photography, computer technology, cinematography, journalism and PR. You might want to work in the thick of technical post-production, realize your vision through cinematography or work in publicity.

Movie schools offer film production and film studies courses, with classes in Film Production, Film Studies, Screenwriting or Film Marketing. Classes might cover experimental cinema, and world cinema, as well as an array of courses that examine the films of individual directors, such as Ingmar Bergman or Alfred Hitchcock.

Film and photography courses combine photography, filmmaking, and video-making. Many post-production artists are film school graduates that either specialized in coursework related to one particular area, or are people who were brought into apprenticeship programs through friends.

Cinematography deals in the collaborative process of translating screenplays and treatments into meaningful and stimulating film and TV programs and is yet another fascinating area in the exciting and challenging options available in movie schools.
